How Hard is the SAT

Note: This post has been revised to reflect changes to the SAT beginning in March 2016. Hundreds of thousands of high school students set their sights on college each year, which means hundreds of thousands of students are taking the SAT. Understandably, they want to know what they are up against. Particularly those who are are going to be among the first victims, I mean lucky ducks, to take the Redesigned SAT in the spring of 2016. Many of them ask us before they start studying, â€Å"How hard is the SAT?† But, particularly as we begin our journey with the new SAT, which is drastically different from the old one, this is a difficult question to answer. However, we’ve carefully studied the new test, and here’s what we think. First of all, let’s talk about the big question of the moment: Is the new SAT harder than the old SAT? The short answer is no. And here’s why. Your performance on standardized tests is always compared to the performance of the other students who take the test, and your score reflects this comparison. It’s adjusted and scaled. And concordance tables will be developed so that both you and the schools you are applying to can accurately compare your score on the new SAT to a corresponding score on the old SAT. So, if you ignore all the nuances, technically, you should receive the same relative score on both the old and the new SAT†¦.so it’s not harder. But, now for the nuances. Just as some students are better suited for, and thus score higher on, the ACT rather than the SAT, some students who were better suited for the old SAT will not be a good fit for the new SAT and vice versa. The tests are very different and they reward different skill sets. For example, the new test is more reading-focused and passage-heavy across the board. There is a greater focus on higher-level math skills and more questions on algebra and fewer questions on geometry. And there’s a no-calculator section, which can be a frightening prospect to button-happy math students. On the flip side, the SAT has done away with difficult vocabulary, brain-teaser-like math questions, and the penalty for wrong answers, so if these were your downfalls before, insert gloating happy dance herethe new SAT is sooooo much easier! How hard is the SAT compared to tests in high school? The new SAT is supposed to do a better job of testing the same type of knowledge and skills you are learning in school. The old SAT was criticized for its traps, its logic games, its teachable tricks. Now, things are a lot more straightforward. So the new SAT is far more school-like. This being said, you’ll likely find that even the new SAT is harder than most of the tests you take in school for a few reasons: ââ€"  The SAT is likely one of the longest tests you’ll take in high school. It’s 3 hours long without the essay and 3 hours 50 minutes with the essay, and this doesn’t include the time you will spend filling out forms, listening to instructions, and taking short breaks. The sheer length of time that students must be focused and engaged will make the SAT more challenging than tests in high school. Endurance and concentration can be major factors. ââ€"  The SAT has its own unique question types. Although you likely face all kinds of tests in school, chances are you often have to provide your own responses on many of them. Since the SAT is all multiple choice (with the exception of a handful of grid-in math problems), this means that the correct answer is always right in front of you! You don’t have to come up with it out of thin air. If you are good at using answer choices, this means you might find the SAT to be easier than many of your school tests. But keep in mind the SAT is also really good at creating tempting wrong answers (and from what I’ve seen, I might argue that the new SAT is even better at it than the old SAT), so you have to be on your guard. In addition, the question types might be different from what you face in school. For example, you may be used to peer editing essays in English class, but you likely rarely face a multiple choice test that quizzes you on every grammar and rhetorical error th at occurs throughout an essay, like the SAT Writing test. ââ€"  The SAT has a challenging time limit. Most teachers tend to let you take a test in your own time, provided you can finish within the class period, and maybe they even let you go over time. Of course, there are many students that have trouble finishing tests, but even students who never run out of time in school will run out of time on the SAT. This means that in order to finish in time, you need to solve problems quickly, and you likely won’t have time to check all of your answers. How hard is the SAT compared to other standardized tests in high school? The difficulty of the SAT is a small step up from the difficulty of many standardized state tests (although since many states now use the SAT or ACT as their state test, it may be identical!). And I am not talking about the standardized tests you took in middle school. A standardized test for an 11th grader will be closer in level and difficulty to the SAT. Many CAASPP (the standardized test given to students in California) questions look similar to SAT questions. How hard is the SAT compared to building a website? The SAT is not as hard as building a website. The knowledge, time, and energy to design, build, test, and release a website to the world is more of a challenge than the SAT. The SAT is predictable in a lot of ways since it is a standardized test. We know how many questions are on the test and how much time we have. We know the format of the test, and we can learn the different questions types in each section and how to answer them correctly. And we know what we should not do on the SAT. But building a website is fraught with unknowns. Problems lurk in places you don’t even expect. You have to understand pathing, multiple computer languages, file structures, color design, layout, readability, fonts, browser versions, mobile and tablet compatibility, technological turnover, deprecation†¦. And that is just on the tech side of building a website. If you are building one for someone else, your task is even harder. Now you have to be concerned about the opinions, expectations, and desires of another person. But the SAT requires none of this specialized knowledge, and it is definitely not based on the whim and fancy of a single person. But how hard is the SAT compared to†¦? Depending on what you are doing, the SAT might be hard and it might be easy. I guarantee this guy thinks that SAT is pretty easy since he helped build the Mars Rover. But his difficulties are not our difficulties. Maybe you actually think the SAT is hard. Maybe you think it is easy. You tell me what you think is harder or easier than the SAT. By 2012, this number jumped to 1.77 million students being homeschooled, this equaling to 3.4% of all students in the United States where to this day that number continues to stay right around. If 3.4% of students country-wide is equal to 1.77 million students, we’re looking at close to 4 million children/teenagers dealing with mental illness in just the United States. So now you may be wondering how the two are exactly connected, and that is what I am here to further explore. Is there a connection between the two, and if so what kind of connection? What I wanted to look deeper into was the overall amount of children/teenagers in schooling dealing with mental illness. Then my next question to look further into was, are the children developing these mental illnesses possibly developing these mental illnesses because of the form of education they are getting? So I decided I would to compare the mental illness statistics in public education and in homeschooling. The common association with school in general is that perhaps you have to actually like it and be a good student to be able to enjoy it, right? It makes sense, if a student struggles to enjoy what they are learning and struggles with the actual material, they are less likely to be happy at least in school. From what studies have shown, the less connected the students are to being at school and in the classroom (in public education), the more likely they are to go down the wrong path either with mental illness, substance abuse, or not finishing their high school career. This means children/teens may dread having to wake up on those school days, which then turns into an eventual hate for going to school every day. These are all starting issues eventually lead to depression in these children/young teenagers. These issues are not new, however, there have always been students who have hated school. So then why is this generation making a jump in the mental illness area? â€Å"Behavioral health has become a public health crisis. No other public health crises are as widespread or contribute as much to the burden of illness in the U.S. as do behavioral health disorders. By 2020, mental and substance use disorders will surpass all physical diseases worldwide as major causes of disability.† The answer to all of this? Technology. To some this may come as a surprise, but to me and I’m sure most of today’s society, it all makes sense. Today teens are using technology more than ever, especially because it is an ever-growing part of our society. The issue is that they rely on it too heavily, and studies have begun to show the drop in face to face social interaction between teenagers and their friends dropping noticeably after 2011. Thinking back to the time of 2011, smartphones were really making their big break out into the popularity of our society at the time, and because of this it was easier than ever for students to communicate with each other without actually hanging out, it was simpler, they relied on it too heavily and it created social and mental issues within these teens inside the school environment. This then leads into the increase in homeschooling today. Children/teenagers who are regularly feeling anxious, stressed, or depressed in high school often feel homeschooling is the safer route for them to take, and if they do not feel this way, their parents do strongly. Of course, there are other reasons for parents to want their children homeschooled, for example, if they do not agree with the material being taugh t, or if they do not think it is safe to send their child to a public education system. I have found that public education is actively causing mental illness, but this does not necessarily mean that homeschooling is the answer and that public education is to be blamed solely for mental illness in children and teens. So after successfully finding that public education can cause these problems, I started to look into the statistics of homeschooling. I quickly found that I would not be able to clearly answer my question on whether one is causing mental illnesses more than the other. When looking into mental illness tied to homeschooling, what I found is that it is not just tied to the homeschooling, but to the community these students are being homeschooled in. Statistically, many areas that are high in the homeschooling practice are of Christian faith, more conservative, religious, regions. Many may wonder why, but it has been proven statistically that actively practicing Christians are at a higher risk of developing these mental illnesses. Why, you may ask? The answer is simply for the reason that it has been found that the practicing conservative Christians do not take the time to actively practice and acknowledge the idea and importance of mental illness. This includes the overall education of mental illness as well as the importance of speaking about personal mental health issues. Due to this, these students are more prone to developing these disabilities because they do not know how to properly handle them. Society in general has created this stigma over time assuming that if we do not talk about mental illness it will simply go away, and this practice is even more prominent for those a part of the conservative Christian practice. This is because of their overall practice with faith, and in the most severe of these practices they often do not believe in taking medications that would alter the way your brain works or your emotions are controlled. In most cases, they actually find taking these medications to be a sin against God and their faith. In fact, 41% of Christians questioned by a Baylor University study said that they were told by someone in their Christian practice that their mental illness was not real. Going into this topic, I expected to come out finding a strong, solid answer that homeschooling is causing mental illness more so than the public education system due to the lack of socialization skills caused through the practice. To me, it seemed like a simple answer, homeschooled children are not surrounded by other children daily therefore they do not have the opportunity to practice their socialization skills. But instead, I actually found quite the opposite. I can not stand firmly and say that one form of education is causing mental illness than the other because there is research proving that both do quite frequently. However, from what I have gathered through this process the public education system seems to link closer to mental illness disabilities more so than homeschooling. This may be because there is more research done on public education, or if it is the opposite and there just is not enough research on homeschooling children. Either way, this growing issue of mental i llness within education of children and teenagers is its own issue that needs to be worked on in today’s society.

Race and gender heavily influence the course of peoples’ lives. Shakespeare’s â€Å"Othello† depicts a society in which racist and misogynist behaviour informs and affects how characters are perceived and treated. Women in the play are viewed by men as objects, available for their possession and use. The constant subtle and overt racism that Othello encounters throughout the play contribute to his downfall. The unjust treatment of women and people of colour in â€Å"Othello† is proof that their society is one of racism and misogyny. Male characters in the play perceive women as objects to possess and use as they see fit. Unwed women were considered the property of their fathers until marriage, and this is how Brabantio views Desdemona in the play. This is demonstrated when Brabantio discovers Desdemona’s marriage to Othello and says to her, â€Å"‘Gentle mistress;/ Do you perceive in all this noble company where most you owe obedience? ’† (1. Iago states that Bianca is a prostitute who is in love with Cassio, despite the fact that Cassio does not respect her. One can infer that Bianca relies on Cassio for her living and wants to marry him, however, likely unbeknownst to her, Cassio laughs at her with his friends, is solely using her for sex, and likely has no intention of marrying her whatsoever. Emilia, the only other female character in the play, is very aware of this dynamic between women and men. This becomes indisputable when Emilia says, â€Å"’They are all but stomachs, and we all but food;/ they eat us hungrily, and when they are full,/ they belch us. ’† (3. 4. 98-103). Emilia remarks on the way men usewomen with a lack of reverence, treating them as food to consume when they want and to throw away when they are finished. This statement is an accurate metaphor for Bianca and Cassio’s relationship, but also for that of Emilia and her verbally abusive husband, Iago. Every female character in Othello faces disrespect, mistreatment and misogyny from the men in their lives. Racism is prevalent and poignant i n Venetian society. Iago uses racist language to amplify the anger in Brabantio when he reports on Desdemona’s marriage to Othello. Iago shouts, â€Å"‘Even now, now, very now, an old black ram/ is tupping your white ewe. ’†(1. 1. 89-90). Iago uses racial slurs to his advantage, by calling Othello â€Å"an old black ram† he is referring to the Elizabethan-period belief that black men were animalistic sexually, and he is trying to anger Brabantio with the imagery of his daughter sleeping with an older black man. Brabantio’s racism is the dominant reason for his reaction to Desdemona and Othello’s marriage. This is evident when he claims, â€Å"‘She, in spite of nature,/ of years, of country, credit, every thing,/ to fall in love with what she fear’d to look on?’†(1. 3. 96-98). In this quote, Brabantio is trying to explain that the idea of Desdemona falling in love with Othello is unnatural, due to her upbringing, and that she was afraid to interact with or even look at people of colour. He believes that it would be impossible for Desdemona to fall in love with Othello so fiercely that he thinks Othello must have bewitched Desdemona for her to fall in love with him. The racism that Othello encounters becomes internalized by the end of the play. After Othello comes to the realization that Desdemona was in fact faithful, he says, â€Å"‘Like the base Indian, threw a pearl away. ’†(5. 2. 343) Othello is comparing himself to a â€Å"base† or uncivilized aboriginal. Throughout the play, Othello fixates on Desdemona’s whiteness, after he murders her, and is told she was never unfaithful, he once again compares her to a perfect, white pearl, and it is notable that pearls are associated with purity. This constant onslaught of racism that Othello faces leads to him acting in the very racial stereotype he was perceived as throughout the play. Racism and misogyny are the factors with the most impact when it comes to the treatment of women and people of colour in â€Å"Othello†. Women are used by men as if they were objects for their gratification. Racism permeates Venetian society so deeply that eventually Othello internalizes it. These prejudiced views make it impossible for Othello and women in the play to do anything without being looked at through a tainted lens. In modern society, not only does racism and misogyny make the objectification of women and the stereotyping of people of colour possible, it makes it truly debilitating.

As mentioned earlier the chorus defines to just walk away although â€Å"No One wants To Be Defeated. † It is better to go because in the end â€Å"It Doesn’t Matter Who is Wrong Or Right. † Jackson uses very powerful words and explains that it is always best to look out for yourself instead of proving yourself to others. It is not worth the struggle (songfacts). As I was analyzing the song, I was listening for specific sounds and noises that would symbolize the meaning of the song. I heard a police siren which could symbolize that if you get involved with gangs and violence, you will end up in jail. I also heard a snapping sound and deep breathing sounds. The breathing sounds could represent the sound of someone running away and catching a breath. I could detect sounds as if someone was getting punched and sounds of blades which could represent a fight. While searching for different meanings of the song I came across an interesting observation. A person said, as she was reading the lyrics she could envision a little devil and angel sitting on top of a young boy’s shoulders who was trying to get involved with a gang. The Angel would tell him â€Å"They Are Out To Get You, Better Leave While You Can† and the Devil would respond with â€Å"Don’t Wanna Be A Boy, You Wanna Be A Man†. The Devil and Angel scenario could be used for all of the Verses in the song (nersa). Besides violence and gang mentality, I could also see that this song could be about how Michael is struggling to find his own identity. During the time when the album was created, Michael experienced the feeling of sad and loneliness and felt undervalued in the music Industry (thrilleralbum). In Joyner’s Interview, Jackson said â€Å"he is now just learning about the value of friendship, and getting to know people†. I find it very strange that a 24 year old man never experienced friendship before ,although for Jackson it seemed to be normal because he grew up on stage. Michael also revealed that he had tutors, because it was impossible for him to attend public schools due to the fact that he was famous. I interpret the first verse (†¦Don’t Wanna See Your Face , You Better Disappear / The Fire’s In Their Eyes And The Words Are Really Clear ) as if the media is attacking Michael Jackson, and spreading rumors about him. He is trying to get even with the media when he says â€Å"You Have To Show Them That You Really Not Scared/ Showin’ How Funky Strong Is Your Fight. † Jackson defends himself and says that he is â€Å"Bad†, as in the best entertainer around. Nobody can judge him, who affirms what’s wrong or right? But on the other hand he doesn’t know how to handle all the stress, and accusations made about him. Should he fight back or just keep moving because he is better than them. In the blogs, a lot of people also related this song to a sexual context. Djcu77, mentioned in his post that the song is about masturbation. I also read post that claimed that â€Å" Beat It† is about child molestation (songmeaning). In my opinion, this was the early stage of MJ and in the early 80’s, when the song was released MJ was not associated with child molestation. Therefore I think that this claim is incorrect. Generally, I believe that the moral of the song is that violence is never a solution for anything. Sometimes it is better to just walk away from a negative or violent situation and get control over feelings that might motivate someone to cause a fight, instead of dealing with an issue by means of being physical violent. Michael Jackson is known to be a peace maker and he stands for peace, not war. When he was interviewed, he admitted that he never hit the streets, which basically means that Michael has never experienced any type of gang related violence (Joyner). Still, he wanted to tell the world that it is okay to just â€Å"Beat It†.

Fortunately, however, there are some simple workouts you can do on nearly any campus. By thinking creatively, you can incorporate your schedule into your workouts instead of trying to incorporate your workouts into your schedule. Go for a Walk It can be fast; it can be slow; it can be on flat ground; it can be up and down the worst hills on campus. Walking, however, can be a great way to get a workout in during your busy day. Walk the long way to class. Park your car far from where you need to be and walk the rest of the way. Walk up the stairs. Walk to and from all of your classes instead of taking the shuttle. Just walk, walk, walk. Go for a Run If you dont have much time and dont mind a little sweat, going for a quick run can be a great college workout.
